Master of Science: Specialization in Data Curation

The Data Curation Education Program (DCEP) specialization within our ALA-accredited master of science offers a focus on data collection and management, knowledge representation, digital preservation and archiving, data standards, and policy. Data curation is the active and on-going management of data through its lifecycle of interest and usefulness to scholarship, science, and education. Data curation activities enable data discovery and retrieval, maintain its quality, add value, and provide for re-use over time, and this new field includes authentication, archiving, management, preservation, retrieval, and representation. Our program will provide a strong focus on the theory and skills necessary to work directly with academic and industry researchers who need data curation expertise.

The Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) at the FIX University is the only top ranked LIS school in the nation, situated within a world class public research university. Library and Information Science (LIS) as a discipline emphasizes the use of information technology to support new approaches to the organization of and access to information. As such, GSLIS is well suited to provide this new specialization in which students are taught to plan and manage data curation systems, create and maintain data collections, and to evaluate and apply data and metadata standards for varied uses across the sciences, humanities, and social sciences.

The ALA-accredited Master of Science degree (M.S.) requires a total of 40 credit hours of course work that includes required core courses. Students in the DC specialization work with their faculty advisors to select electives for a more individualized program that will prepare them for either a general or specialized career path. With the support of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), we are able to provide internships with stipends at our partner organizations' sites. In addition, there will be a limited number of fellowships available for qualified students. We anticipate that our graduates will be employed across a range of information-oriented institutions, including museums, data centers, libraries and institutional repositories, archives, and private industry.

LA VIDA COMO OBRA DE ARTE Y LOS ASUNTOS DE LA HISTORIA EN NIETZSCHE

Hablar de una ética inscrita como un estilo de vida para nuestros tiempos, desde una mirada nietzscheana, es asumir el êthos de un espíritu guerrero, cuya característica es la fuerza, la vitalidad, el espíritu de cuerpo, de nobleza y de valentía. En el que el espíritu del guerrero en sus acciones depende de la voluntad, fuente de decisión y de aseguramiento de la existencia y de los estilos de vida. Es decir, evitar la negación de sí mismo y afirmar una voluntad fuerte en sí misma, cuyo supuesto es ella misma, guerrera de la existencia homérica, en la cual la vida se destaca por su estética, como la justifica Nietzsche en El nacimiento de la tragedia. Obra llena de vida y fuerza, de sangre literaria y filosófica. Nietzsche eleva la vida a una experiencia estética, en la que cobra importancia y justificación, el sujeto se constituye en su propio artista, en su escultor, cuya materia prima es él mismo y sus herramientas de trabajo es la vida misma. En síntesis, volver la vida una estética de la existencia. Es pues que, la vida y el arte toman el lugar central en la ética nietzscheana. Es un juego plástico, en el que uno deja de ser espectador (teórico) para ser actor (praxis), a la vez dejar de ser el actor para ser el espectador. Nos hallamos ante una situación tal en que la vida precisa del arte como modelo a seguir y como voluntad de poder. En síntesis, es el que vuelca la mirada sobre sí mismo desde la filosofía, que raya en un estilo de vida muy particular, en el cual se da todo un régimen de reglas y técnicas que permite asumir dicho modo de vida filosófico. Este modo de vida se caracteriza por ser leal consigo mismo y con los amigos, valiente ante el enemigo, generoso ante el vencido y cortés ante cualquier ocasión. Es decir, aquel que no renuncia a sí mismo, al contrario, hay una afirmación de una voluntad y vida filosófica, en un ambiente cultural favorable. La vida en sí, asumida desde una estética de la existencia, es su afirmación y no su negación terrenal; pues es aquí en este mundo, con todas las dificultades, peligros y tensiones lo que hace a la vida apreciable, en la constitución de una nueva cultura que permite afirmarla. Aseverar la vida es partir de nuestro presente, de nuestra actualidad, la única que nos da la posibilidad de una historia viva. Es decir, una historia que no condene al hombre al pasado, que le evite quedar preso en sus entrañas, en un dominio metafísico que implica decadencia. En consecuencia, la historia ha de servir para el fin de la vida en su desarrollo y no para monumentalizarla, en el que la vida filosófica se encuentra exenta de todo compromiso de orden institucional que pueda mermarla o acabar su libertad, tal como puede suceder con la figura del filósofo rey, el filósofo funcionario público empeñado ante las estructuras oficiales de la época, de la actualidad, del presente. Por tanto, lo que invita a una vida asumida como obra de arte, es mirar y asumir políticamente el presente de otra manera.

Vuelven los jueves de concierto a la Biblioteca Departamental

Con la presentación de un guitarrista argentino y la voz de una cantante caleña, el jueves 16 de febrero se abre, en la Biblioteca Departamental Jorge Garcés Borrero el ciclo Biblioteca en concierto 2012.

Jazz & Soul serán interpretados por el artista Seba López, quien estará acompañado por un trío y a la vez alternará con la voz caleña de Karol Bayer y su cuarteto. El repertorio estará basado en estándares de jazz y canciones de soul jazz de compositores como Horace Silver, Benny Golson, Nat Adderley, Ray Charles entre otros.

Biblioteca en concierto es un programa que institucionalizó la Biblioteca Departamental del Valle del Cauca en el 2011, con el fin de abrir nuevos espacios artísticos y culturales de manera gratuita para todo género de espectadores.

Los artistas:

Sebastián López, nació en la ciudad de Santa Fe, cursó la Licenciatura en Guitarra clásica. Es egresado del Conservatorio Superior de música Manuel de Falla con orientación en guitarra jazz en la ciudad de Buenos Aires y cuenta con vasta trayectoria internacional.

Karol Bayer, ccantante colombiana nacida en Cali, con estudios en la Escuela de música de La Universidad del Valle en el año 2003. Durante varios años conformó los elencos estables del Taller de Ópera de UNIVALLE, realizó presentaciones en diferentes ciudades de Colombia y Ecuador; entre 2006 y 2008 canta y actúa con el Coro de la Ópera de Colombia, el Coro filarmónico de Bogotá y La Fundación Jaime Manzur, además de participar en montajes de repertorio coral de Cámara y sinfónico coral en Colombia y Argentina desde 2003. En el año 2010 gana el concurso para cantantes en el coro estable del polifónico provincial de Santa Fe.

• On the economy broadly: “ Compared with prior summaries, the reports on balance suggest ongoing improvement in economic conditions in recent months, with most Districts highlighting more favorable conditions than identified in reports from the late spring through early fall.”

• Consumer spending: “ Reports on consumer spending were favorable in general. Most Districts reported that holiday retail sales were up noticeably over last year’s season, with New York and Dallas describing sales as ‘brisk’ and ‘robust,’ respectively. Consumer spending and confidence generally were characterized as firmer than in recent reporting periods, although Kansas City reported that spending softened... Reports from most Districts pointed to solid gains or high levels of travel and tourist activity, with pickups evident in both the business and leisure segments.”

• Manufacturing: “ Manufacturing activity expanded in most Districts, generally continuing its steady overall expansion or, in the case of Atlanta, reversing a slowdown in prior periods... The strongest reports came from subsectors such as heavy equipment manufacturing and steel, for which demand has been boosted by robust growth in the energy, agricultural, and auto manufacturing sectors. Reports from Cleveland, Richmond, Atlanta, Chicago, and St. Louis confirmed vibrant activity for auto manufacturers, primarily for domestic makes. By contrast, demand remained somewhat weak for firms in housing-related subsectors, such as a door manufacturer in the Richmond District, furniture manufacturers there and in the St. Louis and San Francisco Districts, and makers of lumber and wood products in the San Francisco District.”

• Real estate: “ Activity in residential real estate markets largely held steady at very low levels, with the exception of further increases in the construction of multifamily residences. The pace of single-family home sales remained quite sluggish throughout the country, although the Dallas District reported a modest increase over the prior reporting period.”

• Bank lending: “ Lending activity edged up overall, primarily due to increased loan demand by businesses. Most Districts that commented on lending activity indicated little or no change in overall loan demand, but the remaining Districts identified increases rather than decreases... Lending standards were largely unchanged across all lending categories. However, New York reported slight tightening for commercial and industrial loans.”

• Agriculture and natural resources: “ Demand for agricultural products was strong during the reporting period, but growing conditions and input prices were mixed... Demand and extraction activity rose further for producers of natural resource products. Energy extraction has been on the upswing. Atlanta reported that companies have been expanding their workforces and increasing their production capacity and exploration plans in the Gulf of Mexico. Minneapolis and Kansas City reported that oil and gas exploration and extraction activity were well above their levels from twelve months earlier, and Dallas noted that a high level of activity is expected to resume in early 2012 following a year-end seasonal lull. Minneapolis and San Francisco reported expansion of mining capacity and activity for a range of industrial and precious metals.”

• Inflation: “ Upward price pressures and price increases were very limited during the reporting period. Reports from various Districts, including Boston, Atlanta, and Chicago, indicated that upward price pressures from rising commodity and input prices have eased substantially, with Boston noting that ‘even food prices have ceased rising.’”

• Wages: “ Wage pressures remained modest overall. The combination of limited permanent hiring in most sectors and numerous active job seekers has continued to keep a lid on general wage increases. However, reports from a few Districts highlighted significant supply constraints and in some cases large compensation increases for workers with specialized skills in selected sectors, including the energy sector in the Dallas District and the technology sector in the San Francisco District. On a related note, Minneapolis reported that employers have increased relocation pay for employees willing to settle in parts of that District where worker availability is limited. Increases in the costs of employee health benefits continued to put significant upward pressure on overall compensation costs, although some employers in the Philadelphia District reported significant rollbacks from past increases.”
